Cat Jams Label

Blanche Braden, Channing Kennedy

Cat Jams Label is based out of Columbia, Missouri. Founded in late 2002 by Blanche Braden, a small brown cat, Cat Jams concentrates on rule-based and outsider music. While mostly a small-run (1-100) CDR label, works have also been released on VHS, audio cassette, dubbed-over audio cassette, data DVD-R, mini-CDR, VCD, and floppy diskette. Packaging concepts are unique for each release or series, and include: CDs glued between pages of random defaced books; CDs placed inside hand-colored tiny pillows filled with unwrapped snack foods and sewn totally shut; ziploc bags containing an original activity placemat, a crayon, a condiment, a floppy diskette, and two black-bottomed CDs in a spatula-fried clamshell case; mini-CDs inside hand-silkscreened invitation envelopes; and many other great ideas. There is currently no interest in releasing on pressed CDs or vinyl. Cat Jams artists and collaborators hail from the United States, Japan, France, and the United Kingdom, and range in age from 3 to 56; many Cat Jams releases are by weird high school students.

While holding to its own aethetics, Cat Jams seeks the disestablishment of music and entertainment via challenging, hilarious, inauthentic, and inspirational fresh voices; hence the slogan "Everyone can make a terrible album." British sculptor Henry Moore is often cited as a philosophical influence.

It should be noted that Cat Jams Label is home to Blanche's brother Piccolo, aka MC Cat Genius, who appeared on Japanese artist Cornelius's 2003 fanmix album PM (Point Mixes) by Humans.

Teen post-psych prodigies Zach McLuckie and Rex McMurry, the original Pows, reunite in a rule-crushing eight-track home recording project. Adam Roberts joined the band for their one live show (the release show for their sole album 'Cadillac Soldier' at Mojo's, Columbia MO March 5 2005) and appears in the album artwork, but does not play on the album. Zach submitted the CD as his admissions portfolio to the Chicago Institute of the Arts, and was accepted. This is a Cat Jams Label release. Zach...

The debut album by Zach McLuckie (guitar and vox) and Rex McMurry (drums). Both of them were 15 years old at the time of this two-hour recording session, but bizarrely economical song structures and lyrics (note the absence of a single bridge, nor a song long enough to need one) foreshadow the duo's future involvement in nearly every art-damaged rock group in their burgeoning college town. Track 11, 'Imagainational Figments,' was an unlisted track on the CD's initial release. This is a Cat Jams...

Cat Jams celebrity mixtape installation by Scottish writer/animator James Harvey . Artwork by thirteen-year-old post-female digital artist Bob Dynamite . The original run of 30 was duped onto donated second-hand commercially released tapes, creating an uneasy truce between the mixset and whatever early-'90s country album was already present. In many ways, still the Cat Jams flagship album. Art- and drinking-prodigy high school kids reinventing popular music for lack of else to do, performing a series of unpredictable (sometimes physically dangerous) shows, getting banned for life from performing at Amnesty International events, and finally splitting up at the threat of becoming a real band and going on to form pretty much every relevant music entity in Columbia, Missouri (Warhammer 48K, Miami Dragons, Sabertooth, Tittyfuck...

The long-awaited fruits of Channing and Piccolo's own remix contest, a half-baked idea from an AIM chat between Channing and Digiki about how awesome it would be to have 100 remixes of the same song. The song in question was the just-completed 'Pancaked,' an epic-in-its-brevity rap track based on the sole demo remaining from Digiki's FireWire drive crash, restructured and intentionally mistimed and flanged by Channing, rapped on by MC Cat Genius (detailing how he was transformed into an evil...

from the included card: A famous writer once said that "Polyvinyl Chloride" was the most beautiful combination of syllables in the English language. Now, Polyvinyl Chloride is also the most beautiful combination of songs ever compiled by Columbia, MO's much-beloved Cat Jams Label. A modern day Ludwig Van Beethoven, Casioist Bob Dynamite created a startling 49 tracks for this album. Just like the Beethoven before her, Dynamite is a prodigy -- a shining star only 14 years. Another young...

Many months ago, Stephen Howard got his hands on a copy of Hiphop E-Jay 2, a $10 CD-ROM from Circuit City that functions as a prerecorded sample-driven instrument arranger for hiphop musicians. Originally making tracks as a lark, his love for the Top 40 took hold and drove him to create an entire album from these neglected phat beats and faceless vocal samples. The result is that most mythical of creatures in the midwest indie-music community -- a RAP ALBUM. Stephen's mostly content to let the...

C. Kennedy and G. Lewis's post-dropout manifesto against music. Terrible improvised songs about Fox Kids cartoons and lame celebrities, culled from several impromptu tape-recorded talentless, sometimes instrumentless, jam sessions at each other's homes at scenic Lake of the Ozarks. Includes "Velcro Felines," as seen on the Painfully Midwestern Comomusic Anthology 1990-2005 volume 1, and a remix by Dusty Sudn. This is a Cat Jams Label release.

New signee and former fifteen-year-old Chris Boeckmann 's debut, showcasing a reappraisal and revitalization of music recording and structure. Soundscapes dubbed together from piano, synthesizers, rewinding CDs, found tapes, and spoken dialogue stare down 'pop' music and the politics of low-fi in this precocious ambient comedy palimpsest. Numbered run of 30 duped-over cassettes, original individual duct-tape packaging by Chris. additional notes: save the unlisted guitar intro, side B was...

Nearly two years ago, french anti-DJ Digiki emailed Channing and MC Cat Genius after hearing their track on Cornelius' PM by Humans remix album, asking them to do something for his own remix contest for Kitchen , his debut. Channing and Piccolo took their time and shook out some tracks, as did labelmates Gregg Lewis, James Harvey , and Tanuki . When the credits for Animals Don't Care: people cook Digiki (d!g!k! microwaves back) , Digiki's self-rehashed compilation of other people's remixes of...

52 nameless original midi compositions by Gregg Lewis, many of which were created manually, i.e. without an external controller, running the gamut from sentimental RPG jams to lametal to horrible noises. The original 50 came with a Gregg-decorated floppy diskette with all the songs in their original MIDI file format, just to show you how it's done and so you can hear them playing totally differently on your computer. This is a Cat Jams Label release.

This disc compiles both Pows albums -- 2003's two-piece bare-bones garage rocker The Pows (recorded when Zach and Rex were both 15) and 2004's three-piece-plus-crazy-psych-production Neoon Winteeer -- as well as their three Rodenburg Compilation tracks and one live electronic jam; in other words, every released note of music (because everything they made was a Hit). With tracks resequenced and remastered for prime flow, and original Rockmanesque artwork by Nick Lambeth , this slick package is...

Entei & Whitesnake is Gregg Lewis and Channing Kennedy respectively, a two-piece post-dronemetal project which came together around the 2004 holidays to record this one-off album. Christmas Illusion 2 takes five loosely holiday-themed songs and audio tracks from cartoon soundtracks, video games, and John Cage, and 'covers' them, liberally using elements of the original songs, transforming and fleshing them out with drone guitar, prepared synth guitar, real and synth drums, and iBook. The...

The followup to their eponymous debut, Neoon Winteeer sees the Pows breaking all sorts of self-created rules upon turning 16 -- adding bassist Ryan Haas and recording songs longer than a hundred seconds (sometimes even featuring bridges!), for example. Also new on this disc is a near-complete abandonment of the garage-rock idiom in exchange for a wicked psychedelic thrash; songs were recorded either at home on four-track cassette or onto reel-to-reel tape at the home studio of new-age...

The pre-side project of Jarrett and Matt, of Emergency Umbrella 's local commercial rockers Kingdom Flying Club. LNS x KFC = different sides of the same coin. In a creation myth mirroring and predating Swamp Fuck's, a multi-session retrospective on a concertedly unconcerted effort to fuck tha haterz and make some dumb music, albeit with more unsuppressible music ability than SF (and an actual four-track). Track 1 is half an hour long. Man, you do the math. A document of the youth of geniuses....
